Early detection of EAB is key to its successful management.

A North Dakota Emerald Ash Borer First Detector Program has been cooperatively developed by the North Dakota Forest Service, North Dakota State University, North Dakota Department of Agriculture, National Plant Diagnostic Network and the USDA APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine to train citizens of North Dakota to correctly identify symptoms and signs of EAB.

Training is provided by people who have first-hand experience with EAB and includes a hands-on session where participants are instructed on how to peel bark in search of EAB larvae. Participants also learn how to submit a suspect sample of EAB and the associated regulatory protocol.
